Midwest Modern
Exploring Michigan’s Design Heritage
Join us for our inaugural program to Detroit—one of the most important artistic centers of the Midwest—to explore the rich design heritage funded by the city’s rapid growth in the first half of the 20th-century. Explore the city’s striking and lavishly-decorated Art Deco high-rises, be dazzled by Diego Rivera’s incredible Detroit Industry Murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and spend an entire day at the influential Cranbrook Academy of Art Campus, enjoying tours of Cranbrook House and Gardens, the Cranbrook Museum, Saarinen House, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Smith House, whose owner’s collection of decorative arts—many by Cranbrook graduates—complement Wright’s Usonian ideals.
This three-night, four-day exploration of Detroit’s architecture, art and design heritage includes curator-led tours, lush summer scenery and insider experiences, including an exclusive event at the stunning, privately-owned Dorothy G. Turkel House (1955) by Frank Lloyd Wright. Everything—from the house, garden, and art collection—is a tribute to creativity, harmony, and innovation, and the pinnacle of our study of Midwest Modern in this fascinating city.
